我们经常使用模型的思想来认识世界和改造世界，这里的模型是针对原型而言的。模型是人们为一定的目的而对原型进行的一种抽象。而数学模型并不是一个新生事物，很久以来它就伴随在我们身边，可以说有了数学并且要用数学去解决实际问题时就一定要使用数学语言、方法去近似的刻画这个实际问题，这就是数学模型。数学模型主要是使用数学知识来解决实际问题，因此，数学是掌握和使用数学模型这个工具的必要条件和重要基础。
本课程设计是用数学的方法解决生产过程中的最优配料问题。
最优配料问题是指生产中通过切割、剪裁、冲压等手段，将原材料加工成所需大小，按照工艺要求，确定下料方案，使所用材料最省，或利润最大。
